History of North Sydney Food Bank: A Source of vigor in North Sydney

Where did it begin? How did we get where we are now ?

"Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much” – Helen Keller
Over 30 years ago churches came together with several service clubs to form the North Sydney Food Bank Society. One of the main reasons for its formation was to better serve the hungry in the community and to have less duplication of services.

The North Sydney Foodbank Society started in the Old Train Station in North Sydney. In January of 2021 it relocated to the former Seton Elementary School. With the move, we expanded on the services that we offer and we are now home to Wilkie Ave Housing Association and NSFB Youth Programing. In the next few months, we will take on a new name, Seton Community Complex. The change in name will encompass everything that we have become and what we strive to be.

Our new location as of January 2021

This year marks over 29 years of operation for the North Sydney Community Food Bank. It is truly a community operation, one for the community to be proud of. We have and have had a team of volunteers from every background. We are also lucky enough to have volunteers from around the world. Volunteer donations of time and food have been important to the continued operation of the food bank. Our goal is to be more than a place where the hungry come to get food. With the opening of the youth programming and Wilkie Ave Housing Association that is starting to happen. The following is a list of church groups and service clubs that came together to form the North Sydney Community Food Bank Society in November of 1994. The list is from an old minute book from meeting attendance June 22, 1994 and September 14, 1994. These groups continue to this day to support the food bank financially, supplying volunteers and morally. All the services clubs and churches were involved in the formation of the North Sydney.
